To choose the best internet service for your specific needs—which may or may not include streaming trashy reality TV during work hours—take a look at Spectrum’s many options and offers.

And search your zip code below to see if Spectrum is available in your area.

How to Self-Install Spectrum Home Internet (13)

Find internet where you live.

Step 1: Open your Spectrum self-installation kit

Now, back to the setup. If you’re anything like me, you may look at your Spectrum self-installation kit and question your once-bold decision. But alas, you know it must be done, for it contains your lifeblood. And don't worry, setting up your own internet seems more daunting than it is.

First and foremost, to quote Brad Pitt in Se7en:

What’s in the box?

  • The Spectrum self-installation kit contains the following:
  • A handy guide with pictures
  • A Spectrum internet modem
  • A Spectrum Wi-Fi router
  • Two coaxial cables (the ones with the little metal barb sticking out of the ends)
  • An Ethernet cable (it has the little clicky end that old phones used to have. If you’re Gen Z, Google “old phone cable”)
  • A coaxial cable splitter (it’s a metal piece that looks like a robot’s abdomen)

If anything is missing, reach out to Spectrum customer service ASAP and kindly ask a representative to provide the missing piece. They are very nice people who want to help you!

My internet suffers heavy use all day because both my partner and I work from home—I write, stream TV, jump into regular Zoom meetings, and constantly scroll on my phone while my partner is on endless Zoom calls for his job as well. I can assure you the equipment provided should work great.

However, if you need something more heavy duty for gaming or to power your in-house nuclear power plant, you can check out our guide to Spectrum’s selection of modems and see which fits your needs best.

Step 2: Connect your modem

Find the coaxial cable that reaches your modem location—and try not to have 500 feet of extra cord tangled up (not only is it unsightly, but it can also weaken your signal).

Connect one end of the cable to the cable outlet in your wall and connect the other end to the modem. Then plug the modem into your power outlet with the power cord.

The modem is going to flash a small light for a bit as it waits to connect. Once the status light is a solid blue, you’re ready for the next step.

Step 3: Set up your Ethernet cable

There are two ways to use an Ethernet cable: You can connect your modem directly to your device, like a TV or laptop, or you can connect your modem to a Wi-Fi router.

A router is a piece of equipment that broadcasts a Wi-Fi signal to all the devices in your home. It also uses security protocols to protect your home internet network from hackers and other riff-raff. So plugging Ethernet from your modem to your router is the best way to go.

  • To plug your modem into your device: Click one end of the Ethernet cable to the modem and the other to your device. Simple as that! If you have a gateway instead of a separate modem and router, you can do the same.
  • To connect your modem to a Wi-Fi router: Connect the two devices with an Ethernet cable. That’ll get wireless internet coursing all over your house, allowing you to connect to Bluetooth and do all the other cool stuff Wi-Fi allows, like laying in bed all morning scrolling TikTok.

Step 4: Activate your Spectrum modem

Now that you’ve arranged all the cords and cables and whatnot in their proper places, go to Spectrum's activation page on your smartphone or computer.

Click on Get Started, and sign in to your Spectrum account.

The activation page offers quick and easy instructions to activate your account and create a username and password so you can log in any time to manage your service, order or replace equipment, or chat with a customer service agent.

You can also download the Spectrum app for all the same stuff—as well as change your Wi-Fi network name and password.

  • Pro tip: Name your Wi-Fi something silly and fun so you don’t forget it and any new guests get a sense of your whimsy.

Step 5: Troubleshoot your Spectrum Wi-Fi

Oh no! The blue light isn’t solid, or perhaps it’s red. Something is off!

If you connected all the cables and did everything the manual said, but your Spectrum Internet is not working, take a deep breath. With setting up your own internet comes a bit of home troubleshooting— you got this.

There could be a few things going on. Here are some possibilities of what the issue could be and how to fix them on your own. We have more recommendations in our Spectrum troubleshooting guide.

  • Your internet modem, router, or receiver may need a firmware update. The update may take about 20 minutes. If your electrical outlet is on a switch, make sure it’s on.
  • The power cable came unplugged. And in the most classic way, try unplugging and plugging back in to reboot the equipment.
  • You didn’t wait long enough. Sometimes it takes the modem a few minutes to fully connect to the internet. It can take seconds or several minutes.
  • The coax cable isn’t connected all the way. Make sure both ends of the cable are fully twisted in finger tight. If you have trouble with your hand grip, a simple wrench may help get a firm grasp on the cable to help tighten. Also, make sure the metal rod isn’t bent or broken. If it is, you may need a replacement.

If none of these are the solution, contact Spectrum customer service online, on the phone, or via chat.

Here’s how to reach Spectrum customer service

A representative can run a diagnostic or walk you through any issues you may be having. I’ve spoken with many of them over my years as a Spectrum customer and they’ve always been helpful and politely laughed at my jokes. Good luck, and godspeed on your self-installation journey!
