    FAQs

    Can vegans eat pumpkin? ›

Pumpkins are, without a doubt, one of the highlights of vegan cuisine.

How do you use a big pumpkin? ›

You can cook with big pumpkins, but most of them have very little flavor. If you are going to cook them, roasting is best, because it evaporates the water to concentrate flavors, and it caramelizes the sugars in the flesh to create more interesting results.

The best type of pumpkin for cooking and baking

It may seem tempting, but I wouldn't recommend cooking with the big pumpkins you normally get at the pumpkin patch. They tend to be very stringy and not flavorful. Instead, I recommend using a pie pumpkin or sugar pumpkin (pictured above).

Can big pumpkins be used for pie? ›

Large pumpkins that we traditionally think of as jack-o-lanterns aren't ideal for pie as they are very stringy and have a lot of seeds. There really isn't very much “meat” to the larger pumpkins. Sugar pumpkins, also known as pie pumpkins, are sweeter. They are also pretty small.

What can I do with pumpkin stringy stuff? ›

Everything from inside your pumpkin can be recycled or used. Pumpkin innards, the stringy orange mess which you scoop out with a spoon ahead of carving, can be roasted, or pureed for cooking in soups. And the pumpkin seeds can easily be roasted (see below).

Can you freeze raw pumpkin? ›

Freeze it: Cooked or raw pumpkin can be frozen. Cut raw pumpkin and store in a labelled sealable freezer bag or container. If you have pumpkin puree you can freeze them in ice cube trays then transfer into a freezer bag or container.

Can you use big pumpkins for puree? ›

For instance, an 8-pound (2-foot-diameter) pumpkin can produce enough puree for three pies, plus seeds, which can be caramelized for a decadent snack. But cooking it can present challenges. It can be difficult to cut up such a large fibrous fruit, and it's tricky to fit it in a small oven.

What are 3 interesting facts about pumpkins? ›

The average pumpkin weighs in at approximately 13 pounds. Pumpkins are 90% water. And yes, they float. A pumpkin is a fruit because it comes from a flower and has seeds.

Yes, dogs can eat pumpkin and it is actually often added to dog foods. Check the label of some dog treats and you may find pumpkin on the ingredient list there too. Are giant pumpkins good for eating? ›

Despite their enormous size, they are not generally eaten, as they are not particularly tasty, and may be inedible. Giant pumpkins may expand by up to 50 lb (23 kg) a day. This is made possible by several genetic adaptions.

Are very large pumpkins edible? ›

Can that large pumpkin sitting on your front porch still be used for eating? Sure — as long as it is in good condition and hasn't' yet been carved. Pumpkins typically used for jack-o'-lanterns usually are larger, with stringier pulp and more watery flesh.

Are big pumpkins good to eat? ›

The flesh of big pumpkins is perfect for soups and curries. The flesh of smaller pumpkins, squash and gourds is best suited for pies, breads and cakes - although it's also delicious in a soup. Smaller pumpkins tend to be more flavoursome, less fibrous and less watery. Remember this when shopping and you'll be away.
