Tired of finicky gear changes? Ratio Technology is shaking up the cycling world with its new Mech 1x rear derailleur, promising seamless shifting and broad compatibility. This isn't just another component; it's a statement.
Priced at £295, the Mech offers both direct-mount and hanger-mounted options, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of bikes. It's designed to play nice with both Shimano and SRAM drivetrains, handling 12- and 13-speed cassettes with various gear spreads.
What's really special? This derailleur is the first of its kind to be manufactured in the UK in 60 years. Metal components are crafted in the Lake District, while 3D-printed nylon parts come from Kent. And the best part? You can rebuild the entire thing with just a multi-tool!
Ratio's director, Tom Simpson, believes the Mech's performance rivals electronic systems, but with a lighter weight. He argues that poor mechanical shifting is often due to friction within the derailleur itself. To combat this, Ratio has incorporated high-quality stainless steel bearings to minimize friction and ensure durability.
Multiple Cassette Compatibility
Ratio's Mech is a full derailleur, unlike the brand's previous offerings, which focused on adapting cable-pull ratios. It can be attached to your bike frame like SRAM T-Type derailleurs and is compatible with UDH dropouts or traditional hanger mounts, with the ability to switch between the two.
Ratio tested prototypes throughout the winter of 2024-25, refining the design and adding features like a clutch and interchangeable cable-pull adjuster fins. These fins allow the Mech to work with different levers.
But here's where it gets controversial... Unlike SRAM's derailleurs, which lack B-screws or limit screws, the Ratio derailleur includes them. Ratio designed the derailleur geometry to maintain a consistent B-gap when shifting across the cassette.
This means that while SRAM T-Type and gravel Full Mount derailleur users are limited to a single cassette, the Ratio system offers greater flexibility. It's compatible not only with SRAM but also with Shimano mechanical shifting, across both 12- and 13-speed road and MTB platforms.
When asked about potential patent infringements with the direct-mount option, Simpson clarified that SRAM's patents protect their unique installation process. Ratio's design, however, doesn't infringe on the concept of mounting a derailleur coaxially with the rear axle, as this is not a novel idea.
Ratio Mech Derailleur Options and Prices
The Ratio Mech derailleur is available for direct or hanger mounting, with cage lengths for 46t or 52t maximum cassette sizes and a choice of seven cable fins. These options aim to provide compatibility with most 12- and 13-speed 1x drivetrains. Ratio plans to add more options in the future.
The Mech is designed for easy setup and can be rebuilt using only a multi-tool. It also features a Cage Stop for easier wheel removal. At launch, the Mech is available in black, with silver and blue options to follow.
The Ratio Mech derailleur is priced at £295 / $388 / €334 / AU$592.
