Is it just me, or is brunch the best meal ever? Savory, sweet, carb-full or carb-less, meat-filled or meat-less, brunch is the bomb. The only problem with brunch (not like it’s a real problem) is that I can never decide between sweet or savory. Sometimes I wish brunch could be a real thing, with starters, mains and desserts. Now that would be Brunch. And for starters, I’d choose this Crispy Salt and Pepper French Toast.

Before this, I never tried savory French toast, but when I saw this recipe on Food52, I had to give it a try. Green onions, cilantro and sriracha? It sounded like the perfect wake-me-up and it was. I’ve made it two times already – it’s the perfect midnight snack. I’m pretty jet-lagged but having a ton of fun enjoying massive night time marathon sessions of House of Cards. I’m so happy to be home/in the land of Netflix! And I’m super excited to have an oven and four burners again!

Crispy Salt and Pepper French Toast Recipe via Food52
serves 1-2

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • sprinkle of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon green onions
  • 1 tablespoon cilantro
  • 2 slices thick bread, preferably day-old or stale
  • butter or oil for the pan
  • sriracha to taste

In a shallow bowl, beat together the egg, milk, salt, pepper, green onions and cilantro. Dip slices of bread into egg mix allowing the bread to soak up the eggy goodness. Melt a pat of butter or a touch of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the soaked slices of bread and fry, flipping once, 2-3 minutes per side or until deeply golden brown and crispy. Enjoy warm with sriracha to taste.

    YES to this! Followed by your lemon-meringue french toast for the dessert course! I always want sweet and savory at brunch, too… sometimes I order pancakes PLUS chicken-fried steak and gravy and then I’m really sorry. I mean, I’m so happy, but so full! Welcome home!

    Oo, that looks soooo good. I love that you kept all the potentially-savory aspects of french toast (eggs, bread, milk, salt), but just got rid of all the sweet ones & made it totally savory — and with all my favorite ingredients to use with eggs!

    Now I kind of want to take your french toast and turn it into grilled cheese! (…with some tomato slices in there, too.) Of course it’d be grilled cheese that you’d probably need to eat with a knife & fork, but I wouldn’t complain about that. :)

    Yes please! I usually don’t go for french toast because the traditional syrup extravaganza is too sweet for me. but this? I could definitely get behind a plateful of this!

    I had to read this recipe to believe it. After all my life eating butter, salt & pepper on my french toast I thought I was the only one that dislikes syrup. The only difference is the sriracha. I have to try adding it to mine. Pretty sure I will like it as I love hot sauce on my scrambled eggs.

    It’s really weird because I grew up in Malaysia, and savoury french toast was the only way to have french toast. I didn’t have my first taste of sweet french toast until I came to Canada to study and it kind of blew me away haha Savoury french toast all the way!

    Lovely! In the UK we always have French toast (or eggy bread) savoury. My kids like it with garam masala and a bit of chilli, or just plain with salt and ketchup, but I really like the look of this recipe. Yum.

    Made this this morning using some garlic and olive oil Turkish bread I had. Pretty good. I didn’t have siracha and probably should have added something more to replace it but it was still good.
