In a new post, Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared a slew of Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot images. After initially concluding in 2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer will return in a new series. A pilot was ordered by Hulu, which has completed filming. At the time of writing, the revival has not received a full series order to continue production.
On Gellar's Instagram, she shared 11 behind-the-scenes images from filming the pilot episode. Gellar can only show "very little" of the secretive project, but does provide some interesting looks. Without giving spoilers, Gellar teases the filming of the pilot, including an image of a chair for returning executive producer Gail Berman and a sealed season 7 action figure of Buffy with her scythe.
Among these are images of Gellar holding a stake with director Chloé Zhao, and a message that includes Buffy's memorable line to Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg): "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live." Underneath the quote was Zhao's message to the cast and crew:
Let's embark on this adventure together with joy, empathy, curiosity, and respect. Life is both beautiful and difficult. We will be rewarded and tested. We will be brave. We will live to the fullest and know that we are never alone. We will always have each other. Happy first day!
What This Means For The Buffy Reboot Pilot
Gellar is social media savvy and knows how to tease the upcoming reboot. A day before the announcement of the pilot, she posted a coy selfie that had a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reference of her in "yummy sushi pajamas." With that in mind, she may be providing some extra details.
Gellar has posted multiple images of her action figure on the set of the reboot. As she walks away from the crater of Sunnydale in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series finale, she still holds on to her scythe. Given its connection to the Slayer line, the iconic weapon could be making a return in the pilot.
The Buffy quote that Zhao included is also particularly interesting. Buffy says that line to her younger sister, Dawn, before sacrificing herself in the 100th episode "The Gift." After Trachtenberg passed away, Gellar, a producer on the new show, posted a modified version of the same line on her Instagram:
Michelle, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will always love you. The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live… for you.
Gellar has stated that the show will find a way to honor Trachtenberg. However, as it is only the pilot episode of what will hopefully be more to come, the show may not dive into Dawn's story immediately. "The Gift" is one of the most iconic episodes of the show, and the reference just may be the strength of the line instead of a plan for the pilot story.
Our Take On The Buffy Pilot Images
Although the series has not been officially picked up yet, it does feel like an inevitability. With Gellar regularly teasing the show, and the talented team behind the show, including Zhao and showrunners Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman, the series looks to be heading in the right direction.
While there is hope that former Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars will return, the pilot looks to be creating its own identity. However, it will certainly have some references to the past, some of which Gellar may be teasing in her latest post.
